Find a coach and take lessons
This is the step that pays off most in Catalonia: as well as fixing your grip and posture, the professional teaching you is the one who later runs your practical test and reports your handicap to the federation.
Get your federation licence
It's issued by the Federació Catalana de Golf, it's compulsory to play on approved courses, and it includes accident and third-party liability insurance. Without a valid licence you can't apply for a handicap.
Pass the two tests
A practical one, run by your coach where you take lessons, and a theory one, which is a test on the Rules of Golf. The full procedure, and what each part costs, is just below.

How to get your handicap in Catalonia
In Catalonia there are two tests: a practical one and a theory one. Your coach runs the practical one where you take lessons; the theory one is a test on the Rules of Golf.
1. Hold a valid federation licence
This is the prerequisite: without a licence paid up for the current year, you can't apply for a handicap.
2. The practical test: your coach runs it
It takes place at the club or course where you take your lessons, and the professional teaching you certifies it. They are the one who tells the federation the handicap they've awarded you, so that you can sit the theory test.
3. The theory test: a rules exam
It's a written test based on the Player's Rules, available on the Federació Catalana de Golf website and as an app for iOS and Android. You can sit it at the federation's offices during opening hours for federated players, or at clubs and courses that offer it.

If you sit the exam at the federation's offices you can pay the €10 by card on the spot. If you sit it at a club or course, you'll need to show proof of the bank transfer. The €13 for the RFEG is paid online, through a link sent to you by email: no transfer needed. Your handicap isn't effective until that payment has gone through.
Who doesn't have to sit the tests
- If you've held a handicap before and can prove it.
- If you're 21 or under (benjamín, alevín, infantil, cadete, boys and girls): it's awarded by the club's Competition Committee or, failing that, by your coach, who reports it to the federation by email.
- If you're a federated Pitch & Putt player with a handicap below 16: you're exempt from both tests, just quote your Pitch & Putt licence number.
If you're coming from Pitch & Putt
Catalonia has the strongest Pitch & Putt tradition in Spain. If you're federated and your handicap is 16 or lower, you can move across to golf without sitting the tests. This is the conversion table:

Play in Catalonia without being a member of any club
To play a Catalan course you don't need to pay any club's joining fee or annual subscription: you pay a green fee per round and you play. What TEEUP does is negotiate that green fee with each club, one by one, so it costs you less.

It's your playing level summed up in a number: the strokes over par you typically need for a round. The better you play, the lower it gets. It lets players of different levels compete evenly, and many courses and competitions ask for it before letting you play.
Can I play a Catalan course without being a member?
Yes. You pay the green fee for that round and you play, with no joining fee and no monthly subscription. As a TEEUP member you get a negotiated discount on the official green fee at the Catalan courses on the network, and across the rest of Spain you get access to reciprocal agreements at a fixed rate.
Which clubs do I need to start?
