Golf for women: how to start without anyone getting your equipment wrong

Golf for women: how to start

Women's golf is the fastest-growing segment in Spain, and yet the information aimed at women starting out remains thin and, too often, wrong.

Let's begin there: almost everything said about "ladies' clubs" is a commercial simplification, and choosing equipment by that label is the quickest route to a set that does not fit you.

Equipment: the label is not what matters

Sets marked "ladies" combine three things: softer shafts, shorter clubs and thinner grips. They are reasonable on average, which is why they work for many people. But you are not an average.

What actually determines the clubs you need:

VariableWhat it decides
Swing speedShaft flex
Height and wrist-to-floor measurementClub length and lie angle
Hand sizeGrip thickness

A taller player with good swing speed may need stiffer shafts and longer clubs than a standard ladies' set. A smaller player with less speed may need even more flex than the set provides. The label does not know; a measurement does.

The most expensive mistake: inheriting a relative's clubs. Standard men's clubs are usually too long, too stiff and gripped too thickly. The result is a swing that distorts to compensate for the equipment, and those compensations then cost months to undo.

The adjustment with the best return: the grip. A grip that is too thick forces a hold from which you cannot release your hands through impact, and that produces balls to the right systematically. Regripping is cheap and you feel it immediately.

At Teeup you can do indoor fitting and buy clubs adjusted to your real measurements, rather than choosing by shelf category. The detail of what to look at is in which golf clubs you actually need to start.

Which tee to play from

Tees are not assigned by sex: they are assigned by distance. The red markers are usually the most forward, which is why they get associated with women's play, but seniors and any beginner use them too.

The correct criterion: play from the tee that lets you reach greens with playable clubs. If a par 4 takes driver plus wood plus hybrid, you are playing a course that is not for you yet.

Rule of thumb: multiply your driver distance by 28. That is roughly the total course length that suits you. Hit your driver 150 metres and your ideal course is around 4,200 metres.

How to read the card and pick a tee is in how to read a golf scorecard.

The distances that are normal

To take the pressure off: an average female amateur hits a driver 145 to 165 metres and a 7-iron 95 to 105.

Those figures depend on swing speed, not sex. A senior man with the same speed hits it exactly the same. The full chart is in golf club distances.

If somebody tells you that you "should" hit it further, they are comparing you to television.

The licence and the handicap

The process is identical for every player: a federation licence through your regional federation or a course, then proving your standard according to your region's procedure.

One practical point: the maximum handicap is 54.0 for everyone, with no distinction. And the RFEG fees make no distinction either: €90.30 with a handicap for adults over 21 in 2026.

The whole procedure, region by region, is in how to get your golf handicap in Spain.

The real problem: who to play with

This is the obstacle that gets discussed least and causes the most people to quit. It is not technique or equipment: it is arriving at a course knowing nobody.

What works:

  • Group beginner lessons. Beyond the learning, you leave with three or four people at exactly your stage. It is the best door in.
  • Women's circuits and competitions. Most regional federations run circuits with handicap categories, high handicaps included.
  • Club playing groups. Many courses have fixed social play days. Ask in the pro shop: it is one phone call.
  • Start with 9 holes. Less time, less pressure and far easier to fit into a schedule.

Five practical things nobody tells you

(01) The glove goes on your non-dominant hand. Right-handed, the left. Just one.

(02) The dress code. Collared polo, golf trousers, skirt or shorts, and flat-soled or golf shoes. Private clubs are stricter; ask when you book. The detail is in your first day on a golf course.

(03) Pockets. Look for golf clothing with real pockets. You need room for tees, a marker, a pitchmark repairer and a spare ball, and a lot of women's golf clothing simply doesn't have them.

(04) The bag. If you plan to walk, a lightweight stand bag with a double strap. Carrying a loaded bag on one shoulder for 18 holes is needlessly uncomfortable.

(05) Sun cream and a cap. Four hours in the sun. In Spain, non-negotiable.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need women-specific clubs? You need clubs that fit your height, swing speed and hand size. Ladies' sets are a reasonable starting point, but a measurement is what decides.

Which tees should I play from? The ones that let you reach greens with playable clubs. Multiply your driver distance by 28 to find the total course length that suits you.

How far does an average female amateur hit it? 145 to 165 metres with a driver and 95 to 105 with a 7-iron. It depends on swing speed, not sex.

Is the handicap process different? No. Same procedure, same fees and the same 54.0 maximum.

Can I start without knowing anyone? Yes, and the most effective route is group beginner lessons: you learn and you leave with a group at your level.

How much does it cost to start? €300 to €600 in year one if you go about it sensibly. Full breakdown in how much it costs to start playing golf.
