How to get your golf handicap in Spain: the complete 2026 guide

How to get your golf handicap in Spain

A handicap is what turns loose rounds into an actual sporting record. Without one you play; with one you compete, measure your progress and can enter any amateur tournament in the country.

The process has three steps and one complication: the second one changes depending on which region you register in. Here are all three.

What a handicap actually is

It is a number representing your standard of play, so that golfers of different levels can compete on equal terms. The lower the number, the better you play. The current maximum is 54.0, and that is where everybody starts.

That number is your handicap index. At each course it converts into a different playing handicap, because not every layout is equally hard: the system applies that course's slope and course rating to work out the strokes you receive there. Confusing the two is the most common mistake among newly registered players.

Gross and net. Your gross score is the strokes you actually took. Your net score is gross minus your handicap. Amateur competitions usually award both: a gross prize (best player outright) and a net one (best relative to their own level).

Step 1: the federation licence

There is no shortcut here: to obtain a handicap you must hold a valid federation licence.

How to get one:

  • If you are a club member: through the club secretary.
  • If you are not: as an independent player through the regional federation covering your address, or through a course where you take your beginner course.

The national RFEG fees for 2026, uprated by 3.1 % in line with annual inflation:

CategoryRFEG fee 2026(2025)
Adult with handicap (21+)€90.30€87.60
Adult without handicap (21+)€77.30€75.00

That €13 difference is the handicap authorisation charge. On top of this national fee, some regional federations add their own, and several also charge for the level test. Check yours — rates are reviewed every season.

Other practical points:

  • Valid for the calendar year, January to December. It cannot be split.
  • Renewed automatically by bank charge, usually in late December or early January.
  • Since 2020 the RFEG no longer issues physical licence cards in any case.
  • It includes accident and civil liability insurance, with exclusions. Read the current year's insurance circular rather than assuming you are covered whenever you play.

Step 2: proving your standard of play

Here is what almost no guide tells you: there is no single procedure in Spain. The authority to assign a handicap sits with the regional federation, and each has solved it differently.

Route A — Theory and practical test

The most common route for adults registering as independent players.

  • Practical test: around an hour, on course, checking that you can play the basic shots and move around the layout without holding anybody up.
  • Theory test: training on rules, conduct and on-course procedure. In some federations it is a multiple-choice exam with a pass mark — in Aragón it is 40 questions with 30 correct answers required. In Madrid the theory session is delivered online by the Referees Committee.

Route B — Certificate from a qualified professional

In several regions, an RFEG-qualified teaching professional can sign the handicap assignment document and file it with the federation. It is the fastest route and usually goes with having taken your beginner course with that professional.

In the Basque Country, for example, the handicap is normally processed by an authorised teaching pro who also handles the federation paperwork with you. The full pathway is in starting golf in the Basque Country.

Route C — Exemptions

Check these before signing up to anything:

  • Young players. In many federations, under a certain age you are exempt. In Catalonia, registered players aged 21 or under sit neither the theory nor the practical test.
  • Pitch & Putt players. Coming from Pitch & Putt with a handicap below a certain threshold can exempt you. In Catalonia that threshold is 16.
  • Competition results. Certain results in events over three rounds or more count as proof of standard.

Before anything else, call your regional federation or the course where you play and ask about the specific procedure. Ten minutes on the phone can save you an entire exam.

Step 3: your first handicap and how it moves

Once the paperwork clears, you receive your initial handicap index: 54.0 in most cases.

From there the number moves with your scorecards. For a round to count it must be played on a rated course, recorded in a valid format (medal or stableford) and signed and submitted according to the club's procedure.

How it is calculated

The World Handicap System does not use all your rounds: it takes your best 8 results from your last 20 and averages them. One bad round in isolation does not hurt you — the system measures your recent best, not your raw average.

The 36-point benchmark

The calculation rests on stableford points against your net par:

Result on the holePoints
Net birdie3
Net par2
Net bogey1
Net double bogey or worse0

A round played exactly to your level adds up to 36 points. Above 36 your handicap comes down; around 36 it holds; well below, it barely rises thanks to the best-8-of-20 average.

Scores outside competition

In Spain you can register casual rounds so that they count towards your handicap, without waiting for a tournament. It is the most underused tool available to amateur golfers. What you do need: tell the club before you go out, have them confirm the course is in playable condition, and hand in a card signed by you and your marker.

One warning: if you stop paying your licence, your handicap stops being official and stops updating.

What the whole process costs and how long it takes

ItemCostTypical timeframe
Beginner course (if you take one)€150-3004-8 weeks
Federation licence€90.30 (RFEG) + regional feeImmediate once processed
Level test feeVaries by federationOn passing

Realistic total: €220-400 and one to three months including the course. If you already play and only need the paperwork, it drops to around €100-150 and a few weeks.

I have my handicap. Now what?

This is where a lot of people stall: you have a licence, you have a 54.0 and no idea where or with whom to play.

  • Play 9 holes at first. Eighteen holes off 54 is a long five hours and a lot of frustration.
  • Register every round, including the bad ones. The system keeps your best 8 of 20; hiding scores only leaves you without data.
  • Enter a social tournament early. The stableford format exists precisely so that a 54 and a 12 can play together and have it mean something.
  • Practise with structure, not volume. The Teeup Academy gives you scored drills with targets by level, so every session leaves a number behind.

And for the practical part — where to play without being a member anywhere — Teeup lets you book green fees across a network of more than 40 courses in Spain, with reciprocity conditions and discounts if you are a member.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a federation licence to play golf? To play at rated courses in Spain, generally yes. For an official handicap and to compete, always.

What is the maximum handicap? 54.0. That is where every new player starts, men and women alike.

How much does a golf licence cost in 2026? The RFEG fee for an adult over 21 with a handicap is €90.30 (€77.30 without), plus the additional fee charged by some regional federations.

Do I have to sit an exam to get a handicap? It depends on your region and your age. Many federations require a theory and practical test for adults, but exemptions exist for younger players, for Pitch & Putt players below a certain handicap, and for anyone proving their standard through results or a qualified professional's certificate.

Can I get a handicap without being a club member? Yes, by registering as an independent player with your regional federation.

How is the handicap calculated? By averaging your best 8 results from your last 20 valid rounds.

Can I submit non-competition rounds? Yes, through scores outside competition — notifying the club before you play and handing in a card signed by you and your marker.

What happens if I don't renew my licence? Your handicap stops being official and stops updating. It reactivates on renewal.

A handicap is paperwork, not a barrier. One call to your federation, a beginner course, and a few weeks later you have a number of your own.
