Almost everyone thinks the first thing is buying clubs. It's the last. And in the Valencian Community it's worth knowing from the start that the handicap isn't sorted out in an afternoon.
Get yourself to a driving range
A bucket of balls, borrowed clubs and an hour. Before spending anything, find out whether the movement hooks you.
Take lessons with a professional
They'll fix your grip and posture before those turn into bad habits. And if you're going to federate as an independent player, it's a professional who later certifies your handicap.
Get your federation licence
It's compulsory to play on approved courses and it includes accident and third-party liability insurance. It's issued by the Federación de Golf de la Comunitat Valenciana.

How to get your handicap in the Valencian Community
An exam isn't enough here: you have to hand in three scorecards from real rounds and pass a rules test. It's one of the most demanding procedures in Spain, and it's worth knowing before you start.
Who assigns it
If you're a club member, your club's Competition Committee. If your licence is as an independent player, a golf professional. Either way, the document that reaches the federation is the handicap certificate, signed and stamped.
The three scorecards
You have to hand in three Stableford scores. If you're a member of a club with an approved course, you play them at your club. If you're independent or a member of a club without an approved course, you play them on any approved course in play, under Handicap Conditions. Each card is signed by a marker and by you, and certified by the Competition Committee of the course where you played. At least one of the scores must correspond to the maximum handicap allowed, and the best of the three is used to calculate your initial handicap.
What a marker is
The person who plays alongside you and signs your card, vouching for your strokes. They aren't a referee and don't have to be a professional: they're another player who plays with you and records your score.
The rules exam
Before a handicap can be assigned, you have to pass an exam on the Rules of Golf, etiquette included.
What gets sent and what doesn't
Only the completed handicap certificate goes to the federation. The three scorecards and the written exam aren't sent: whoever certifies you keeps them.

What it costs
€12 to the Federación de Golf de la Comunitat Valenciana for the initial handicap assignment, plus the difference between a licence without a handicap and one with a handicap, which is paid to the RFEG. Junior, Cadete, Infantil, Alevín and Benjamín categories are exempt from the payment, but still have to submit the certification.
Exempt cases
If you've held a handicap before and let it lapse, you confirm the one you had (or a lower one) and you're exempt from the initial assignment fee. If you're coming from another country with a handicap, you're exempt from the tests by presenting a PDF from your federation with your last 20 rounds: course or competition name, date and Score Differential.

Play in the Valencian Community without being a member of any club
To play a Valencian course you don't need to pay any club's joining fee or annual subscription: you pay a green fee per round and you play. What TEEUP does is negotiate that green fee with each club, one by one, so it costs you less.
- No joining fee, no monthly subscription, no lock-in: you're not tied to one club and you play wherever you like.
- In the Valencian Community the network currently has a single course, and the deal is a discount on the official green fee. You've got it in the table below.
- Membership also gives you access to TEEUP's reciprocal agreements* across the rest of Spain, where you play at a fixed reciprocal rate negotiated directly with the club.

Lessons
Between €40 and €60 a session, depending on the venue and the professional. If you're federating as an independent player they're also your route to the certificate: it's a professional who signs it.

What is a handicap and what's it for?
It's your playing level summed up in a number: the strokes over par you typically need for a round. The better you play, the lower it gets. It lets players of different levels compete evenly, and many courses and competitions ask for it before letting you play.
Can I play a course without being a member?
Yes. You pay the green fee for that round and you play, with no joining fee and no monthly subscription. As a TEEUP member you get a negotiated discount on the official green fee at the Valencian course on the network, and across the rest of Spain you get access to reciprocal agreements at a fixed rate.
