Get yourself to a driving range
A bucket of balls, borrowed clubs and an hour. Before spending anything, find out whether the movement hooks you.
Take a few lessons
A professional will fix your grip and posture before those turn into bad habits. A handful of sessions is enough to know whether you want to carry on.
Get your federation licence
It's compulsory to play on approved courses and it includes accident and third-party liability insurance. In the Balearics it's handled by the Federación Balear de Golf, either through a club or as an independent player.
Prepare, then pass the tests
Whoever assesses you — your club or the federation itself — sets their own tests, and you're expected to turn up properly prepared. What ends up reaching the federation is a signed and stamped document. The full procedure is just below.

How to get your handicap in the Balearic Islands
In the Balearics the process comes down to one document: the application signed and stamped by whoever assesses you.
Who assesses you
Your club's Competition Committee, or the Federación Balear de Golf itself. Each sets its own tests: you're expected to have prepared properly and to pass them.
Which document you submit
Any application reaching the Balearic federation's offices must be signed and stamped by the club's Competition Committee or by a professional with a valid licence, stating their licence number, and giving the handicap you've been assigned in the relevant box. As well as the federation registration form, whoever assesses you will provide the First Handicap Assignment Form.
If you're coming from another region
Email fbgolf@fbgolf.com with your first name, surname and licence number, saying that you want to belong to the Balearic territorial federation — either through a specific club or as an independent player — and give your new postal address and bank details if they've changed.

Play in the Balearics without being a member of any club
To play a Balearic course you don't need to pay any club's joining fee or annual subscription: you pay a green fee per round and you play. What TEEUP does is negotiate that green fee with each club, one by one, so it costs you less.
- No joining fee, no monthly subscription, no lock-in: you're not tied to one club and you play on whichever island you're on.
- At the Balearic courses on the network, the deal is a discount on the official green fee. You've got it course by course in the table below.
- Membership also gives you access to TEEUP's reciprocal agreements* on the mainland, where you play at a fixed reciprocal rate negotiated directly with the club.

Lessons
Between €40 and €60 a session, depending on the venue and the professional. In the Balearics they count double: whoever teaches you may be the person who assesses you for your first handicap.
