The best golf courses in the Basque Country and Navarre

Northern Spain has a special relationship with golf. A long history, courses set in landscapes that are hard to match, and a golf culture that combines technical quality with the warmth that defines this corner of the country.

Yet it is a region that the major digital golf platforms have ignored for too long. While Madrid and the Costa del Sol accumulate guides, reviews and articles, the Basque Country and Navarre remain unmapped territory for most players arriving from elsewhere.

This guide changes that.

Why play golf in northern Spain

Before the course list, it is worth understanding what makes this region special for golf.

The climate. Yes, it rains. But that also means the fairways are always green, courses are always well maintained and temperatures are mild year-round. There is no exhausting summer, no burned fairways, no greens hard as concrete. The green you see in the photos is real, and it is there twelve months a year.

The landscape. Golf courses in the Basque Country and Navarre compete with any setting in Europe. Mountains, coast, valleys, and combinations of all of them in layouts that often make extraordinary use of the natural topography.

The history. Golf has been part of the Basque Country since the late nineteenth century. The Real Golf Club de San Sebastián is one of the oldest clubs in Spain. That tradition shows in the culture of the game, the quality of the layouts and the experience of playing courses with decades of history.

The food. This is not a minor detail. Combining golf in the north with Basque and Navarrese cuisine is one of the most complete experiences the sport can offer in Spain. The green fee and the meal after the round are part of the same experience.

The best golf courses in the Basque Country

Real Golf Club de San Sebastián — Donostia-San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa

The oldest and probably the most iconic. Founded in 1901, the Real Golf Club de San Sebastián is located in Lasarte-Oria, a few kilometres from the city centre. Its 18 holes offer a historic layout with views over the Bay of Biscay at several points on the course.

It is a course with character. The greens are demanding, the fairways are sloped in several areas and the north wind can completely transform the experience. This is not a place for long undisciplined drives — course management and positioning are decisive.

The course regularly hosts regional tournaments and is a reference point for the golfing community in Gipuzkoa.

Practical details: 18-hole course, par 70. Green fees vary by season and day of the week. Open to visitors with advance booking.

Real Golf Club de Zarauz — Zarautz, Gipuzkoa

Zarautz, home to the longest beach in the Basque Country, also has one of the most distinctive courses in the north. The Real Golf Club de Zarauz sits on cliffs with direct views over the Cantabrian Sea, and several holes are played practically at the edge of the drop.

It is a 9-hole course, which makes it different from the others on this list, but the landscape experience has no equal. To complete 18 holes, the course is played twice from different tees, which adds enough variety.

Difficulty is medium-high: the sea wind is the determining factor, and it can turn an apparently simple hole into a genuine challenge.

Practical details: 9 holes, par 35 (playable as 18). Accessible green fees. Essential if you are in the coastal area.

Real Sociedad de Golf de Neguri — Getxo, Bizkaia

The benchmark course of Greater Bilbao. The Real Sociedad de Golf de Neguri has been the heart of golf in Bizkaia for more than a century. It is located in Getxo, 20 minutes from Bilbao, in an upmarket residential area.

The design has classic English influence: fairways that are wide in some stretches and very narrow in others, century-old trees acting as natural obstacles, and elevated greens that require precise approach shots. It is a course that rewards clean play and penalises inaccuracy.

Access is more restricted than at other clubs on this list — a letter of introduction from an associated club or official booking is generally required — but the quality of the course justifies the process.

Practical details: 18 holes. Access with letter of introduction or advance booking. Historic course with great tradition in Basque golf.

Golf La Galea — Getxo, Bizkaia

More accessible than Neguri, La Galea is another solid option in Greater Bilbao. It is located at the tip of the Getxo headland, with views over the Bilbao estuary and the Bay of Biscay.

It is a compact course but with a lot of character. The holes along the cliff are among the most memorable in the north, and the wind does its work at virtually any time of year. Maintenance is consistent and the facilities are up to date.

Practical details: 18 holes, par 70. Visitors welcome. Good public transport connections from Bilbao.

The best golf courses in Navarre

Club de Golf Ulzama — Guerendiain, Navarre

Twenty kilometres from Pamplona, in the Ulzama valley, is one of the most beautiful courses in northern Spain. The layout winds through ancient oak and beech forests, with a design that fully respects the natural environment.

Ulzama is a course that needs no artifice: nature does the work. The holes run between tall trees, the ground has natural gradients in several areas and the course stays consistently green year-round thanks to the valley's microclimate.

Difficulty is moderate, making it ideal for mid-level players who want to enjoy the round without facing an extremely punishing course.

Practical details: 18 holes, par 70. Modern facilities. Quality restaurant.

Club de Golf Aranguren — Mutilva Alta, Navarre

The closest course to Pamplona and the most accessible in the region. Located less than 10 minutes from the city centre, it is the reference option for local golfers and visitors who do not want to travel far.

The design is functional and enjoyable: 18 holes with well-integrated natural obstacles, medium-sized greens and a calibrated difficulty that suits all levels. It is not a spectacular course for its landscape, but it is a solid destination for a quality round near the city.

Practical details: 18 holes, par 72. Easy access from Pamplona.

Club de Golf El Señorío de Bertiz — Narvarte, Navarre

In the heart of the Navarrese Pyrenees, a few kilometres from the Bertiz Natural Park, this course combines an exceptional natural setting with a layout that makes the most of the valley's topography.

El Señorío de Bertiz is one of the courses furthest from mass tourism, which gives it a special character. In high season there are barely any waits, the welcome is warm and the feeling of playing with the Pyrenees as a backdrop is hard to forget.

Difficulty is medium-high due to the terrain's relief.

Practical details: 18 holes. Accommodation facilities nearby. Ideal for golf getaways with an overnight stay.
