Playing golf in Alicante and Murcia: Spain's best-value golf destination

Playing golf in Alicante and Murcia

South-east Spain is probably the best-value golf destination in the country. It lacks the Costa del Sol's density and its international profile, and precisely because of that the prices are noticeably lower for courses of a very similar standard.

It is where the golfer who already knows the south goes when they want more rounds for the same money.

The climate: the structural advantage

The south-east has one of the driest, most stable climates in Europe. In practice that means two things:

You play twelve months a year, with the sole exception of midday in July and August.

Courses rarely close. There is no frost as on the central plateau and nothing like the rainfall of the north. A trip here in January has very little chance of being ruined by weather.

SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
OptimalOct-MayEight months of very good conditions
Peak pricingFeb-Apr, Oct-NovCoincides with the arrival of European visitors
LowJun-SepStrong midday heat. Lowest prices

The specific window: January. Mild temperatures, empty courses, and low-season pricing before the February rush begins.

Prices

Indicative 18-hole green fee ranges:

Type of courseHigh seasonLow season
Accessible€35-60€25-40
Mid-range€60-95€40-65
Resort / high end€100-160€70-110

Compare that with the Costa del Sol table and the difference is obvious: in the south-east you play an equivalent course for 25-40 % less. That is the region's central argument.

With Teeup reciprocity conditions, discounts run from 10 % to 60 % depending on the course, which over a four-round trip changes the maths considerably.

Which area to choose

AreaCharacter
Northern Costa Blanca (Alicante, Benidorm, Denia)Greener, more relief, very developed tourist infrastructure
Southern Costa Blanca (Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa)High density of courses and residential resorts. Very accessible
Inland Murcia (Mar Menor, Altorreal, around Murcia)Desert-style courses, lower prices, less crowded
Cartagena - La MangaThe region's historic golf area, with established courses

For a three or four-round trip, southern Alicante and the Mar Menor area hold enough courses within a short radius that you never drive more than twenty minutes. The full trip structure is in how to plan a golf trip in Spain.

How it plays here: the desert style

This is the real technical difference from the rest of Spain.

A large share of the region's courses are desert or semi-arid style: well-defined green fairways surrounded by unwatered natural terrain, with sharp transitions between green and arid ground.

The practical consequences:

  • Miss the fairway and the ball is easily lost. There is no intermediate rough to save you: there is natural scrub and rock.
  • Bring more balls. An erratic player can lose six or eight in a round.
  • Less driver than you think. This is the region of Spain where playing with margin saves most shots. It is pure dispersion maths: dispersion in golf.
  • The ground is hard and dry. The ball runs a long way, on fairways and greens alike. Allow for extra roll off the tee and firm greens on approaches.
  • Afternoon wind in the more open areas, especially near the Mar Menor: how to play golf in wind, rain and cold.

The strategy that works here: 3-wood or hybrid off the tee on almost every hole, and aim at the middle of the fairway without ambition. You will finish with fewer shots and the same balls you started with.

What to check before booking

  • Buggy. At several courses it is compulsory or strongly advised because of the distance between holes.
  • Federation licence. Almost all rated courses ask for one.
  • Course condition. In summer, ask whether any areas are being overseeded.
  • Multi-round packages. Many courses and resorts here offer 3 or 5 green fee bundles at considerably better rates than singles. Worth asking.

Frequently asked questions

Is golf cheaper in Alicante and Murcia than on the Costa del Sol? Yes, noticeably. An equivalent course costs 25-40 % less.

When is the best time to play golf in the south-east? October to May. January is the best combination of weather and price. June to September only early and late.

What is a desert-style course? A course with well-defined fairways surrounded by unwatered natural terrain. Miss the fairway and the ball is easily lost.

How many balls should I bring? More than usual. Twelve if you are erratic: the ground off the fairway does not forgive.

Can you play in winter? Yes, it is one of Europe's best winter destinations. The dry, stable climate means courses rarely close.

Do I need a buggy? At several courses it is compulsory or strongly advised because of the distances between holes. Check when booking.

Alicante and Murcia are the answer for the golfer who wants more rounds on the same budget. Less fame, the same climate, and considerably lower prices.
