# Playing golf in Madrid: courses, seasons and how to play without being a member

Published: 2026-04-28 · Reading time: 5 min

## Playing golf in Madrid

Madrid holds more federation licences than any other Spanish region and is, at the same time, one of the harder places for a golfer who isn't a club member. The reason is simple: **heavy demand concentrated at weekends, and a significant share of the supply tied to private clubs**.

The good news is that there are more courses open to green fees than people assume, and that the calendar and the clock open real gaps if you know where to look.

### The Madrid season is not the southern season

Here the coast doesn't rule: the plateau does.

| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| **Optimal** | Apr-Jun, Sep-Oct | The best conditions of the year. Full courses at weekends |
| **Playable with caveats** | Nov-Mar | Cold mornings, occasional frost, slower greens |
| **Difficult** | Jul-Aug | Extreme heat from midday to 7pm. Early and late slots only |

**Two particularities to know:**

**Winter morning cold.** From December to February it is common to tee off in 2-5 degrees and find frost. Many courses delay opening or use temporary greens until it thaws. **Always ask when booking in winter.**

**Altitude.** Madrid sits at around 600-700 metres. That is roughly 4-5 % more distance than at sea level. Not enormous, but if you have been playing on the coast you will notice your 7-iron flying slightly further than your chart says: [golf club distances](/en/blog/distancias-de-los-palos-de-golf).

---

### The three corridors

The region's courses cluster along three routes out of the city. Choosing by corridor — rather than by individual course — is what saves driving time.

| Corridor | Character |
|---|---|
| **North-west (A-6, sierra)** | The densest cluster. Courses with elevation and trees |
| **North (A-1)** | Good supply, quick access from the north of the city |
| **South and south-east (A-3, A-4, A-42)** | More public and accessible courses. Flatter terrain |

**And one underrated option:** the public and municipal courses, plus the 9-hole and par 3 layouts around the metropolitan area. They are the cheapest, quickest way to play midweek, and for a beginner they are a better experience than a full 18: [types of golf course](/en/blog/tipos-de-campo-de-golf).

---

### Prices and how to lower them

Indicative 18-hole green fee ranges:

| Type | Midweek | Weekend |
|---|---|---|
| Municipal or public | €25-45 | €40-65 |
| Mid-range | €50-80 | €70-110 |
| High end | €100-160 | €130-200 |

**The number one lever in Madrid is the day of the week**, not the season. The gap between a Tuesday and a Saturday at the same course is far wider here than on the coast, because weekend demand is enormous and midweek demand isn't.

**The other levers:**

- **Afternoon tee times.** In summer they are the only sensible option and also the cheapest.
- **Nine holes.** Well under half the price of 18 and they fit into a weekday afternoon.
- **Reciprocity conditions.** With **Teeup** you get preferential conditions across the network, with discounts from 10 % to 60 % depending on the course.

### Getting your handicap in Madrid

The Madrid Golf Federation has its own procedure, as every regional federation does.

Two specific points: the theory element is delivered **online** through the Referees Committee, and the difference between the licence fee without a handicap and with one is **€13**.

The full procedure, region by region, is in [how to get your golf handicap in Spain](/en/blog/como-sacarte-el-handicap-de-golf-en-espana).

### How Madrid plays

**Sierra courses in the north-west corridor:** elevation, pine woods and fairways framed by trees. Dispersion is expensive here, because a lateral miss leaves you behind a pine with no angle. Less driver than you think: [dispersion in golf](/en/blog/dispersion-en-golf).

**Southern and south-eastern courses:** more open, flatter ground, wider fairways, more wind. A better place to work on the long game without every miss costing a recovery shot.

**In winter:** slow greens and wet fairways. The ball doesn't run, so every distance is pure carry. Take one more club into greens.

**In summer:** hard, dry ground. The ball runs a very long way. This is when the driver can backfire on narrow fairways, because twenty extra metres of roll puts you in the rough.
