# Playing golf in northern Spain: the summer alternative

Published: 2026-06-09 · Reading time: 6 min

## Playing golf in northern Spain

While half of Spain stops playing at midday in July and August, the Cantabrian coast is having its best months of the year. **It is the only part of Spain where summer is peak golf season**, and that asymmetry is its biggest advantage.

There is a second one: the terrain. The northern coast has **links and semi-links** courses that play completely differently from everything else.

---

### The inverted season

| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| **Optimal** | Jun-Sep | Temperatures of 20-26 degrees. The best time of year |
| **Good** | Apr-May, Oct | Very playable, intensely green, lower prices |
| **Variable** | Nov-Mar | Playable, but it rains. Courses open almost always |

**What to understand about the northern climate:** there is no extreme winter cold and no extreme summer heat. What there is, is **rain spread across the whole year**. Courses are open nearly always and the turf is immaculate precisely because of it, but come prepared.

**The practical consequence:** a golf trip to the north in August is one of the best decisions a Spanish golfer can make, because the rest of the country is unplayable at midday and here you can tee off at two in the afternoon without a problem.

### The links style: what really changes

This is the technical reason to come, beyond the weather.

On the northern coastal courses, especially those built on sandy, exposed ground, the game changes completely:

| Feature | How it affects play |
|---|---|
| **Firm ground** | The ball runs a long way. The high approach doesn't work |
| **Few trees** | Wind is the main obstacle, not trees |
| **Natural undulation** | Constant sloping lies |
| **Large, firm greens** | Hard to stop the ball with spin |
| **Shifting wind** | The same hole can play two clubs differently by time of day |

**How it plays:** low and running. You land the ball short of the green and let it run. Putting from off the green is a normal play, not an emergency measure.

**The two shots you need:**

1. **The knock-down.** Ball back, hands ahead, grip down, three-quarter swing, chest-high finish. It is in [how to play golf in wind, rain and cold](/en/blog/jugar-con-viento-lluvia-y-frio).
2. **The long running chip.** With a 7 or 8-iron from the edge of the green, instead of a high pitch: [the short game: chipping, pitching and bunker shots](/en/blog/juego-corto-chip-pitch-bunker).

If you have been playing in the south, your first round on a links will be disorienting. Your second won't be.

### The four regions

| Area | Character |
|---|---|
| **Basque Country** | Coastal and inland courses, good density, food as an added argument |
| **Cantabria** | Significant golfing tradition and courses right on the coast |
| **Asturias** | Fewer courses but beautifully kept, spectacular surroundings |
| **Galicia** | More scattered supply, with coastal and inland courses full of character |

**For a three or four-round trip**, the Basque Country and Cantabria hold enough courses within a short radius to use a single base. The trip structure is in [how to plan a golf trip in Spain](/en/blog/organizar-viaje-de-golf-por-espana).

### Prices

Indicative 18-hole green fee ranges:

| Type of course | Summer | Rest of the year |
|---|---|---|
| Municipal or public | €35-55 | €25-45 |
| Mid-range | €60-95 | €45-75 |
| High end | €100-160 | €75-120 |

Northern prices are more stable across the year than southern ones, because there is no clear dead season. The most effective lever here is not the date, it is **the day of the week**.

**Teeup** gives you reciprocity conditions with discounts from 10 % to 60 % depending on the course.

### The kit you need and nobody brings

Playing in the north means packing the bag differently:

- **A proper golf waterproof.** One that lets your shoulders turn. A stiff rain jacket blocks the swing entirely.
- **Two gloves, or one rain glove.** A wet grip makes you squeeze, and a tense hold ruins the swing.
- **A dry towel inside the bag**, not hanging outside it.
- **A large golf umbrella.** A small one is useless.
- **Spiked shoes.** On wet grass and slopes, spikeless slip.

**And the playing adjustment:** in rain the ball does not run at all. Every distance is pure carry, so take more club into greens. The greens, on the other hand, hold well and you can attack pins you would never go at in the dry.

### Getting your handicap in the north

Every regional federation has its own procedure. In the Basque Country, for example, the handicap is usually processed by a qualified teaching professional who also handles the federation paperwork with you — one of the fastest routes available.

The full procedure, region by region, is in [how to get your golf handicap in Spain](/en/blog/como-sacarte-el-handicap-de-golf-en-espana).

### Frequently asked questions

**When is the best time to play golf in northern Spain?**
June to September. It is the only part of the country where summer is peak golf season.

**What is a links course?**
A course on sandy coastal ground: firm, with few trees and plenty of wind, where the ball runs a long way and the high approach does not work.

**Does it rain too much for golf?**
It rains throughout the year, but courses are open almost always and the turf is in excellent condition precisely because of it. Come prepared.

**How do you play a links?**
Low and running: you land the ball short of the green and let it run. Putting from off the green is routine.

**How much is a green fee in the north?**
€25-55 at public courses and €45-160 elsewhere, depending on course and season.

**Is it worth going in winter?**
It is playable, but there is more rain and less daylight. Spring and summer are clearly better.

The north answers the Spanish summer problem and is also the only place in the country where you will learn to play low, running golf. Two separate reasons to go.
